When you start a job, if you want it to turn into a lifetime career path, make plans early. Envision the position you want and work toward it. When you know exactly where you want your career to go, this will help you aim, learn and achieve. If you do not plan for a successful career you may very well find yourself stuck in your cubicle thinking about all of the things that could have been.
Set short and long term goals. Where do you want to see yourself in your career at the end of the year? What position do you want to earn by the time retirement roles around? If you do not have a goal, it is hard to move forward and grow.
Where do your interests lay? Your day job may consist of selling bedding collection and other linens, whereas you may be interested in actually designing quality linens. The job you have now that pays your bills and feeds you is not the same position you have to keep for the rest of your life. If you are unfulfilled with your job, think about changing career paths.
Before you make any rush decisions, make sure you know what your niche is. Maybe you accidentally discovered you have a passion for interior design while creating your own full loft bed. Remain conscience of the things you do on a daily basis that make you happy.
If you are certainly ready to stop daydreaming about your sanyo rice cooker while at work, it may be time to concoct a plan. So, you know you want to be an interior designer. What do you have to do to get there? What are the educational qualifications you need? Network with people in that field and get a feel for what it actual takes to become a successful interior designer (or whatever other profession you are interested in).
Create a plan of action that is specific. Think of it as your step by step guide to your goal. This puts your career goal into a realistic perspective. It transforms it from a dream into a realistic goal.
People often dream about a great job, doing something they love, but not too many people have the courage to go after their aspirations. If you want to achieve something in your career, dream big. Scratch out failure as an option and create an action plan. This will help you achieve the dream of doing a job you actually enjoy.
