Printer ink prices are undoubtedly high. This might not be so bad when you break it down into how many pages you can get per cartridge, but not many people do that. The average person just knows how long the cartridge lasted before they were forced to go buy a new one. There are times when the ink runs out long before it actually should, which ends up costing quite a bit.
Before really considering replacing your printer with one that uses cheaper ink, look closely at the settings your printer is currently on. There should be three quality levels you can choose from: high (usually called Best), medium (called Normal), and low (generally called Draft). These will determine how much ink is used when you print in order to get the quality chosen. Best means a good amount of ink in order to get bold, clear printing. Normal uses less ink while still providing good quality printouts. The “Draft” setting uses less ink than any of the other options, but the print quality will be low. It’s still generally fine for everyday use, though.
Unless you are printing photos or extremely important papers, you can set your printer to Draft mode. Doing this will reduce how much ink is used by a significant amount after a while, which means your cartridges and your money will last longer. Check the settings right before you print on more than one occasion just to make sure that it’s not automatically changing back to some default setting.
One option that is pretty popular is to use a refilling service to refill used cartridges. Instead of purchasing brand new cartridges each time you need ink, you can keep using the original cartridge and simply pay a small amount of money to get it injected with more ink. This way, you can reduce the cost of an ink cartridge by $10, sometimes more, when compared to buying a brand new ink cartridge. You should be aware, however, that there are a fe printers that don’t like using ink refills. Some printers will believe that the cartridge is still empty. While this may only result in a warning every time you try to print, other printers might not print at all. Rare, but it happens.
Another way to go about it is to buy new cartridges only after thoroughly shopping around first. There are online ink specialty stores that stock large varieties of inks. They can often sell their ink at lower prices than your local office supply store. You can often get even better discounts by purchasing refurbished ink cartridges instead of brand new OEM (original equipment manufacturer) ones. There has been a long-standing debate about whether or not refurbished cartridges are reliable, but in general, if you buy from a good source, they will work just as well as brand new cartridges. (Just FYI, this author has bought countless refurbished ink cartridges for his 6 year old Canon printer and has never experienced any problems due to the cartridge).
You could be spending less of your hard-earned money on ink cartridges. Forget about buying from high-priced retailers and brand new cartridges each and every time. Buying ink refills or refurbished cartridges, looking around for low prices, and careful printing can lead to less ink being used and more money being saved. By simply shopping around to find a better price, you can save money.
